There was no dressmaking course this week, due to it being half term. And I have had so much work to do hence the lack of blogging. Just a quick update to show you bagels we attempted today, not the easiest but they tasted delicious, even if they weren't quite traditional looking bagels.

Pattern magic - This book is amazing (Google it and look at images) They have a copy of it at my evening class and I think it's what I'm going use for my next project, I want to try more of the pattern cutting side of things. Basically it's clever ways of pattern cutting and manipulating the fabric to make amazing shapes. I don't know how well it will go but I'm going to give it a go and hopefully I'll have some impressive things to show. Had an amazing weekend back home, such a lovely time with my family and so much wonderful food.

This week was one of my most productive weeks, I'd already pinned in the jacket lining so the next step was to sew it in, I knew this wasn't going to be the easiest of jobs - linings are horrible. Firstly I sewed the front seams and along the top of the jacket, the collar. Next was the fiddley bit, sewing the sleeve lining into the sleeves, once it's figured out its fine but you need to sew it inside out but making sure you can pull it through after. After severally attempts at pinning I got it right and the sleeves were lined. The final stage was sewing along the bottom part by machine part by hand.

And here is the finished thing. I decided against a fastening down he front and left it open. I'm so happy with it, and it only took four weeks. I may hand stitch on some gold detailing but I'm undecided.

This skirt is what I made during my dress making class last year, I found a photo so I thought I'd post it. It has a nice story behind it as the whole thing is made from a piece of fabric my granny gave to me. It already had a band band around the top, which I then reused to make the waist band. It was loosely based on an Isabel Marant skirt, I saw once. The pleated detail isn't that clear in this photo but I had to make he pattern for it myself and oh my pleats are hard to get perfect.

This week I got so much done at my dressmaking class, firstly settle sleeves in my jacket, the wool fabric I've got sews really well, so they went in nicely. I then had to make up another whole jacket out of my lining material. I wanted to get a nice patterned material but no such luck in the whole of Plymouth  so I ended up with black. This wasn't the easiest to sew, quite slippery and i found it Very hard to add the sleeves. Once this was made I then realized my jacket would look much better with part interfacing part lining so I made up a pattern and cut this out of my wool material. This is what it's like so far (lining-less).

I forgot to update you on what we did this week, we were a bit short on time but planned to make creme patisserie, we originally planned to make pastry cases as well, but we cheated, we'll do that next time.I think we spent more time worrying that we were going to curdle it and mess it up, than we did making it. But it turned out beautiful, tasted so nice. I also went bit baking mad at the weekend and made a loaf of bread and profiteroles ( They need some practice but it wasn't bad for 9 on a Sunday evening and everyone enjoyed them.)

I will update what I achieved in my dressmaking class later this week, however just a quick update to show you the bunting I made for my sister. It turned out surprisingly well, I'm thinking of making some more at Christmas, such an easy way to make a room more homely. Hopefully she likes it, I'm sending it to her as a surprise, post always makes me smile. Sorry the photo is awful, its hard to take a photo of bunting without hanging it.

This week at fashion was rather productive, firstly I set the sleeves on my toile something I'd never done before and was quite proud of how well it went, as long as you're patient it's not that bad easing in the sleeves.

Then I had to do some adjustments on my pattern because for some reason the seams at the shoulder didn't line up. This involved a bit of careful cutting and sticking.

Then it was time to cut out the real fabric - this bit always scares me,  also managed to get all the seams sewn together. Ready to set the sleeves next week.I also got black lining over the weekend which I plan to cut out before next class, it looks quite slippery to sew with, but we'll see.

I'm also making some bunting for my sister's room at university, she said her room didn't feel that homely so I'm going to send it to her as a surprise. I shall post pictures of that next week.

This post is for the purpose of my two friends, (you can visit their blogs here and here), i know you enjoy baking as much as i do so i thought i'd let you know what my friend and i have started this year, inspired by the Great British Bake Off we're going to have Baking Tuesdays. Since we're both keen bakers and have made many a cupcake and banana breads we thought we'd try and bake something new that neither of us had ever baked before. This week we made Crumpets, and oh my they we're delicious and turned out surprisingly well. Crumpets also remind me of home as they often made up a Sunday tea time.

This week I progressed On the jacket making front, I had to reach around another jacket block as the one I traced last week would have been too short. I hen adjusted the positioning on the darts on the front and back of the jacket.

The next stage was to add 1cm of seam allowance around the pattern, after this it was finally ready to trace onto calico, each piece had to be cut twice

I then sewed together each side of the front of the jacket, and then all the. Back panels before pressing. Once this was done I sewed together the shoulders and the side seams.

Finally I sewed the sleeved, now for the tricky part which I going to do before next week, setting the sleeves, wish me luck.

Sorry this hasn't been the most exciting post, I'm off to tonnes next week where there's supposed to be an amazing fabric shop so hopefully ill fall in love with something. There's also nice tea rooms for lunch and a vintage shop, so I'm rather looking forward to that.

Wednesday, 3 October 2012

I thought I'd write this for my two friends who I know read this, since you both know how much I enjoy my weekly dress making course I thought I'd try to update you each week with what I'd done that week.

So last Wednesday I knew it would be the first session where everyone was being taught how to use he machines and have their inductions but since I'd done that last year I thought I'd give myself a little project to get myself back into the swing of things.

So over the summer a family friend gave me a pile of old clothes, for me to wear/ cut up/ recycle as I wished. One thing that stood out to me was this skirt.

Yes not the nicest thing I know, I even tried it on which was funny. However the colour and the suede material were amazing. I recently brought a dress and a jumper in the same burgundy/maroon colour, and the suede was so thick. So since I'm short on clutch bags ( how I do not know, I have so many bags mainly from carboots, charity shops of vintage finds even though I use the same one every day) Any way a clutch bag was lacking from my collection so this is what I made:

It's pretty simple but I like it and I like the fact I made it for a skirt that never would have been worn.

This week I also traced round a jacket bodice and sleeve block but more of that next week.

Sorry this has turned into the longest post ever, I'll update you next week

I have silk shirts and blouses on the brain at the moment but i cant seem to find the exact one i want and have in my head. Anyway here is a little sketch i really like it when different parts of the garment are different colours. ( The scanning turned out awful but you can kind of get the jist)

I am going to try to update this more often, i'm not making any promises Hannah but i shall try. These are my new shoes which make me smile as I've always had a bit of a thing for leopard print.

Over the summer as well as improving my pattern cutting skills along with making several garments most likely dresses, I also want to make a scrapbook, I have so many pages torn out of various magazines and currently they're in various shoe and other boxes but I think it wold be nice to have it all in one place as a reference book.

Thursday, 26 April 2012

I wish i could afford this beautiful Celine iPad box, and i love this little sketch of it, i'm still on the hunt for the perfect case.

Wednesday, 25 April 2012

I know i always post images of ideas which would make amazing dress fabrics but i'm just going to use this as an ideas board. I'm not sure how you'd do it but i think the gills of the mushrooms covered in ink/fabric paint could with some practice make a nice print, especially if some overlapped, something i plan on trying over the summer and making into a simple dress. The picture above from this blog has inspired me even more.

These Lego shoes would make a great DIY, though i'm not really sure i'd be brave enough to wear them myself.

Monday, 23 April 2012

I suggest everyone watches this video, and look out for the beautiful coffee carafe/pot. I'm keeping my eye out in charity shops and car boot sales for one. It would make my morning coffee beautiful, and warmer for longer.

marbled paper

When I was little I always used to make marbled paper, I'm sure it must be possible to make marbled fabric, it would make pretty unique dresses.

Wednesday, 8 February 2012

This little beauty from Oasis is making it's way to my wardrobe very soon.

Tuesday, 7 February 2012

I think vintage jelly moulds would be great inspiration for a pattern on a dress and we have loads at home, so they should come in useful.

Saturday, 4 February 2012

I plan to print these jellyfish all over a navy fabric and make it into a beautiful dress.

Thursday, 2 February 2012

I love The Coveteur hopefully one day my house will be amazing as some of the ones covered. I'm mad about this Isabel Marant gold skirt, i'm making a similar one in my fashion class.

Friday, 27 January 2012

I wish this had been my tea this evening. Macaroons are so beautiful.
